Pyramid of Khafre is in background. It was an odd sensation climbing over the Great Pyramid, looking for minute flecks of charcoal or other datable material, loaded down with cameras, scales, notebooks, and forms with entries for sample number, site, monument, area, feature, material charcoal, reed, wood, etc. It was and the Edgar Cayce Foundation, named for an early twentieth-century psychic who claimed that the Sphinx and Khufu's Great Pyramid were built in 10, B. Old friends and supporters of the deceased psychic had visited Giza in the early s and several of them were willing to put their beliefs to the test by radiocarbon dating the Great Pyramid. Archaeologists believe it is the work of the Old Kingdom Dynasty 4 society that rose to prominence in the Nile Valley from ca. The radiocarbon dates from monuments spanning Dynasty 3 Djoser to late Dynasty 5 Unas , averaged years older than the Cambridge Ancient History dates of the kings with whom the pyramids are identified. In spite of this discrepancy, the radiocarbon dates confirmed that the Great Pyramid belonged to the historical era studied by Egyptologists.

He has also found that similar erosion does not exist in other monuments in the area dating from the Old Kingdom. Schoch has hinted that wet sand could have caused the erosion on the pyramid. We do know that the Sphinx has been buried for the better part of its existence. In fact, it was only unearthed again in However, we have no way of knowing if it was buried in wet sand.
If you accept that the Great Sphinx of Giza was carved during the Old Kingdom, you still have to wonder exactly when. Some experts believe that it was built during the reign of Khufu BCthe man for whom the Great Pyramid was built. Khafre is the man for whom the second largest of the Great Pyramids was built.
The difference is only that of a few hundred years.
It is impossible to use most modern scientific methods to learn how old is the Sphinx. Because it is carved out of stone, carbon dating is out of the question. The only methods available to us are those of observation and deduction.
Who could have possibly carved the Great Sphinx before BC? Why would it appear to be an Old Kingdom structure thousands of years after it was built?
Observation and deduction tell us that no one could have carved the Great Sphinx that long ago. Additionally, the idea that the style of art would have remained the same in Giza for all that time is absurd.
However, concrete evidence cannot be applied to the Sphinx, as there is none. There is no record of it being carved and there is no way of dating it conclusively.

Basically, we used a sledgehammer on a steel plate to generate sound waves that penetrated the rock, reflected, and returned to the surface. This gave us information about the subsurface qualities of the limestone bedrock.
Robert M. Schoch: Research Highlights The Great Sphinx The Great Sphinx of Egypt in its enclosure, with a diagram indicating the deep fissures and undulating surfaces created by water (rainfall) weathering and erosion. (Diagram from the documentary The Mystery of . And as you say, you need organic material in order to do carbon dating, because all living creatures, every living thing takes in carbon during its lifetime, and stops taking in carbon The giant stone pyramids in the early Old Kingdom may mark a major consumption of Egypt's wood cover, and therein lies the reason for the wide scatter, increased antiquity, and history-unfriendly radiocarbon dating results from the Old Kingdom, especially from the time of Djoser to Menkaure.
When I analyzed the data, I found that the extraordinary depth of subsurface weathering supported my conclusion that the core-body of the Sphinx must date back to BCE or earlier. During the seismic studies we also discovered evidence of a cavity or chamber under the left paw of the Sphinx. For what it is worth, some have suggested to me that this may be a "Hall of Records" at the time I was not aware of Edgar Cayce's predictions along these lines.
Additionally, we found some lesser and previously known cavities under and around the Sphinx, and the data also indicates that there may be a tunnel-like feature running the length of the body.
Back in the early s, when I first suggested that the Great Sphinx was much older than generally believed at the time, I was challenged by Egyptologists who asked, "Where is the evidence of that earlier civilization?
Jun 17, Experts use scientific dating techniques to verify the chronology of ancient Egypt's kingdoms. Radiocarbon dating verifies ancient Egypt's history. By Katia Moskvitch Science reporter, BBC News. So, you've dumped Sphinx Carbon Dating her. Or she's dumped you. Either way, once you find yourself single, thoughts soon come around to meeting other women. But getting back in the game, especially after a long-term relationship, can be daunting/ "The problem of dating the Great Egyptian Sphinx construction is still valid, despite of the long-term history of its research. Geological approach in connection to other scientific-natural methods permits to answer the question about the relative age of the Sphinx.
They were sure that sophisticated culture, what we call civilization, did not exist prior to about or BCE. A major mystery has been why these early glimmerings of civilization and high culture disappeared, only to reemerge thousands of years later.
I have now developed a theory, backed up by scientific evidence, to explain why. According to Robert Temple, a moat theory explains the water weathering of the Sphinx without hypothesizing that it dates back to an earlier period of more rainfall than the present.

I will not address his other hypotheses, which I do not find persuasive, that the Sphinx was the jackal [wild dog] Anubis Anubis, associated with the dead and the afterlife, would look to the west, not face east as the Sphinx does and the face seen on the Sphinx is that of the Middle Kingdom pharaoh Amenemhet II, though I note the original Sphinx has been reworked and the head re-carved.
For a review of the evidence bearing on the age and significance of the Great Sphinx, see my book with Robert Bauval, Origins of the Sphinx.
While in Egypt recently I looked at the Great Sphinx with fresh eyes. I will summarize half a dozen points. These limestone temples were subsequently refurbished with Aswan granite facings during the Old Kingdom.
Scientists: Geological evidence shows the Great Sphinx is , years old
The moat theory cannot explain the nature of the very ancient weathering seen on the temple blocks under the Old Kingdom granite veneer.
This is due to ancient rains and the paleohydrology of the area. This erosion is not compatible with pooled water in the enclosure. If the moat theory were true, then the lower strata on the eastern end of the Sphinx Enclosure would be most heavily eroded caused by water being brought in via canals from the Nilebut the opposite is the case. Standing water in the Sphinx Enclosure would not accelerate the depth of weathering below the floor of the enclosure.
